500 students to be admitted in 2013-14 for the two-year course

From the academic year 2013-14, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) will offer MBA (Master of Business Administration) course in distance education mode for working professionals. This will be VTU’s first distance education programme and it will be handled by its Directorate of Distance Education.

VTU Vice-Chancellor H. Maheshappa told The Hindu that the course is meant for professionals who want to further their career by getting a postgraduate degree.

The course is likely to be launched by mid-May, as infrastructure and delivery system are getting ready. The first year’s maximum intake (2013-14) will be 500, adhering to the Distance Education Council’s specifications, said Prof. Maheshappa.

All working professionals with a basic three-year bachelor’s degree in any subject from a recognised institution are eligible for the course. While those with an undergraduate degree require a minimum of three years’ work experience, there is a one-year relaxation for work experience for those who have postgraduate degrees.

The course

The course will be similar to the one being offered in the regular mode, directorate officials said and added that the course will be for two-year duration.

There will be an entrance test for admissions.

“Initially, there will be seven study centres, and we will impart the course through our four regional centres and constituent colleges. We will offer specialisation in human resources, marketing, finance, operations, international business, insurance and banking. Then, we will look at adding one specialisation each year,” the officials said.

About the method of conducting the course, the officials added: “All of VTU’s online initiatives will be incorporated. There will be video lectures and case study illustrations and students will have access to e-library.”

The toppers at the 12th annual convocation of the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), that was held here on Friday, have one common goal: They all want to pursue their higher education.

Abhinav Rao from the Bangalore Institute of Technology, who has bagged seven gold medals, the highest among all and has secured first place in Bachelor of Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering course, aspires to pursue his Master’s.

Sharing his dreams with Deccan Herald, he said he was interested in research and planned to join his sister, currently engaged in research, in the United States. Employed with Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions in Bangalore, he expressed his desire to continue in his job for another couple of years.

He attributed his success to the support and motivation of his parents and teachers. Son of an ophthalmologist and a postgraduate mother, Abhinav is overwhelmed on bagging the first rank and seven gold medals.

For Phalguna P from RNS Institute of Technology, Bangalore, hard work without expectations was the sole mantra to attain this position. He has first rank in Electronics and Communication Engineering and has six gold medals in his kitty.

Son of a banker couple, Phalguna said his short-term plan was to pursue MTech. Employed with Cypress Semi Conductors presently, he has expressed his interests in the designing aspect and wants to pursue Very-Large Scale Integration design.

Shantanu Chakraborty seems to be taking forward the legacy of his father and brother, who are both civil engineers. He has won six gold medals and has secured first rank in civil engineering. He is a student of M V Jayaraman College of  Engineering and is  pursuing his Master’s in Civil Engineering from IIT Madras.

“My first priority is to complete my PhD from IIT Madras and then pursue research abroad,” he said.

Umesh C S of Allegere in Mandya comes from a humble background. He is proud of his parents who supported him to pursue his academic interests in Computer Science and Engineering. His father runs a canteen and has been an inspiration for him to aim higher in life.

Umesh has secured five gold medals and the top rank in his stream and has decided to continue his job with Integra Micro Software Service. He wants to chase his academic interests a notch higher, but according to circumstances.

The toppers stressed that studying from the very beginning was an easy step towards good results. It also relieves students from pressure and exam pangs.
‘Explore energy options’

Addressing the gathering, former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, M R Srinivasan expressed the need to develop all available energy options.

“Without adequate energy, our economy cannot prosper nor can the quality of life improve. We are encouraging wind and solar energy, along with nuclear and hydro, which were non-carbon sources of energy,” he said.
